In a large tent, behind the National Theatre, you’ll find the latest addition to the attractions on London’s Southbank - The Art of The Brick DC Superheroes. An exhibition of Lego art by the artist Nathan Sawaya, the show combines two of the most enduring childhood icons of the last 100 years; Lego, and Superman. Or Batman. Or Wonder Woman. Or whoever your favourite superhero from the DC comics might be. Stepping inside the sealed doors into the blackness, past the fun photo opportunity in the lobby with a life-size Joker eating popcorn, feels a little like you’ve crossed into a new dimension to find more than 120 sculptures made entirely of Lego. A short movie explains how Sawaya wanted to show the balance of good and evil, and how no one ever really thinks they are the bad guy in the movie of their own lives; hence our fascination with the villains as well as the super heroes. An American artist from Oregon who started out as a lawyer, Sawaya now lives in New York and Los Angeles, working almost exclusively in the medium of Lego. This is his first solo exhibition, and comes to London after a successful run in Madrid. The first gallery contains smaller sculptures. The space is filled with heroes both instantly familiar to our 11-year-old reviewer and bafflingly strange. Who knew there were so many superheroes? The recreations of the comic book covers are superb with incredible attention to details. But it’s in the following galleries that we hit Lego gold. A spectacular flying Superman in The Fortress of Solitude gallery. And our favourite in the Themyscria gallery as Paradise Island was renamed in 1987 where a version of Wonder Woman’s invisible plane flew’ in clear plastic bricks suspended individually from the ceiling. Sawaya doesn’t leave anything out. Even Krypto the Superdog has a statue and there’s a rather bizarre Aquaman in the bath. In the DC Dark gallery there is a slightly scary just the right amount for children to love collection of Lego skulls in the style of the super villains they represent. But the overwhelming highlight of the show? Gotham City and the Batcave. A lifesize Lego version of the Batsignal, with a digital display wall of the city rooftops alongside a brooding statue of the dark knight himself. From there you go through a tunnel to the Batcave and the most well-known car of all time. The Batmobile. As usually happens, the exit takes you into the shop. However, there are also a few large tables of Lego where you can spend time making your own creations. Be prepared to take quite a while to leave.

La sculpture du corps de Victor Stone/Cyborg, une des oeuvres les plus graphiques de l’exposition, représente le moment immédiatement après son accident et avant qu’il ne soit transformé en Cyborg. Parfois, les moments les plus obscurs peuvent révéler des forces insoupçonnées. Séquence 03 Les iconesCet espace présente huit Super-Héros iconiques, la Ligue des Justiciers, en taille gigantesque Cyborg, Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash et Green Lantern. On est impressionné par la dignité de Wonder Woman ou la solennité de Superman. Nathan Sawaya nous confronte à une dualité intimider ou être intimidé. Séquence 04 La forteresse de la solitudeSuperman possède d’incroyables super pouvoirs une vision à rayons X, une vision thermique, une force surhumaine et surtout il peut voler. Voler, c’est la liberté suprême. Pourtant Superman a aussi une cape qui peut être le symbole des obstacles que l’on s’impose à soi-même. Penser que nous n’avons pas la capacité ou le courage de faire certaines choses Superman connait aussi cette lutte très humaine malgré ses super pouvoirs. Séquence 05 ThemysciraThemyscira est la terre natale de Wonder Woman et de ses soeurs Amazones, île de fi ction de l’univers DC. Elle est aussi connue sous le nom de Paradise Island. Wonder Woman est à la fois la pure Princesse Diana de Themyscira dans son décor antique et la super héroïne, guerrière amazone. Séquence 06 Le côté lumineux de DCAvec par exemple, la reproduction en Lego de la Lincoln Futura, la fameuse Batmobile de l’émission de télévision Batman » des années 1966-1968. Cette voiture fut adaptée du concept-car Lincoln Futura de 1955. Regardez bien, tout y est le téléphone rouge et même l’extincteur ! Séquence 07 Le coté obscur de DCNathan Sawaya y a représenté le Joker, Sinestro, Brainiac, Bane, Deathstroke, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Riddler et Bizarro. Dans DC, les Super-Héros ne peuvent exister sans les Super-Vilains il n’y aurait pas d’histoire sans cette dualité qui se complète. Cette part d’ombre et de lumière existe en chacun. Séquence 08 Le hall de la justiceLe hall de justice est d’une grande solennité. Chaque buste des Super-Héros de la Ligue des Justiciers Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Cyborg, Aquaman et Flash est accompagné, en diptyque, d’une couverture emblématique de DC. Séquence 09 Gotham CityLe personnage de Batman impressionne. Il n’a pas de super pouvoirs, c’est un simple mortel. C’est le seul personnage de DC qui se construit lui-même. L’atmosphère de la ville de Gotham est très présente dans les histoires de Batman. Dans cette salle, on retrouve la symbolique de la chauve-souris qui veille la nuit, les gargouilles et le fameux Bat signal… Séquence 10 BatcaveMais que serait Batman sans la Batmobile ? C’est probablement la sculpture star de l’exposition. Elle a été réalisée à taille réelle, 5,50 mètres de long. 489 019 briques LEGO ont été nécessaires pour la construire. Séquence 11 La construction d’un hérosNathan Sawaya nous propose une perception différente de nos Super-Héros dans cette salle où son art s’exprime pleinement. The Art of the Brick DC Super Heroes exhibition, which hosts legendary LEGO artist Nathan Sawaya’s famous and stunning works, has proudly opened its doors to private and corporate exhibition, housed on London’s South Bank is home to 120 large-scale sculptures featuring an assortment of legendary DC characters such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Flash and The Joker which have been built from an estimated 2 million LEGO bricks, which provides the venue with a visual treat of rich scenery offering an immersive experience akin to that of a comic book. By day, this jaw-dropping exhibition hosts hundreds of members of the public but by night, the venue transforms into an exclusive events space capable of housing 500 guests for corporate and private pop-up installation, which is due to end in September, boasts an idyllic central London location and works alongside events and office caterers, KUDOS Delivered who provide bespoke, high-end catering in the forms of canapes, food stations and bowl food that, when presented on the exhibition’s opening night, disappeared quicker than The Flash. An amazing looking exhibition is coming to London on the south bank this March and tickets are now on sale here on the website The art of the brick exhibition is by Lego Artist Nathan Sawaya and he has made some amazing Lego designs all based in the DC Comics universe. Including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, The Joker and many many more and also a massive Batmobile over 5 meters long too. DC Super Héros – Des briques magiques The Art of the Brick DC Super Héros » suit un parcours. Ce n’est pas un simple enchaînement de sculptures en Lego. La scénographie est géniale. Elle nous plonge tout de suite dans l’ambiance DC. Statues grandeur nature, des scènes reconstituées, des tableaux, des pages de comics, on ne sait plus où regarder. Bien sûr tout est en Lego. Les sculptures sont tellement puissantes et bien réalisées que l’on a d’ailleurs tendance à oublier que toutes ces œuvres sont faites de briquettes en plastique. D’ailleurs, on en ramènerait bien quelques-unes chez soi. Monsieur Lego vous ne pourriez pas faire des boites adaptées de l’expo ? Il y a 11 séquences qui mettent en lumière toute la complexité de l’univers des super-héros. On ne va pas toutes vous les décrire pour laisser un peu de mystère. Le Joker nous accueille dès l’entrée. Il fait une petite pause avant de retourner torturer Batman. On enchaîne ensuite par une salle qui rassemble les figures marquantes de ce vaste monde. C’est une sorte de Panthéon. Ils sont tous là Batman, Superman, Batgirl, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, etc. Il y a même la couverture de l’Action Comics numéro 1 où est apparu pour la première fois Superman. Tous les murs sont recouverts de pages de comics. On en prend déjà plein les yeux mais la mise en scène monte crescendo. Elles sont toutes replacées dans leur contexte. On avance et on découvre une salle entièrement réservée à Superman puis une autre à Wonder Woman. Cette dernière vous invite à découvrir Themyscira, sa terre natale. On a adoré la reconstitution de son avion invisible en Lego il fallait oser et surtout son déguisement en Diana Prince. Impossible d’évoquer des super-héros sans parler de Super-vilains. Rassurez-vous, ils ont aussi leur place dans l’exposition. Cette salle montre la dualité avec les Super-héros. Batman à l’honneur Le parcours se termine en apothéose avec deux salles consacrées à Batman. La première est une reconstitution de Gotham City avec des décors animés et Batman qui veille sur la ville. voir notre vidéo ci-dessous Entre deux gargouilles, vous découvrez ensuite un passage et vous pénétrez dans la Bat Cave. Une surprise de taille vous attend. Elle mesure 5,5 mètres et elle est composée de 500 000 briques. La dernière salle est réservée aux enfants avec des piscines remplies de Lego.
